What is Ceramic Coating?
The easiest way to think of Ceramic Coating is that it’s a top coat for the surfaces of your car including paint, plastics, metal, glass and wheels.
Ceramic Coating is usually available in small 30ml-50ml bottles, which contain Silicon Dioxide or SiO2 nano particles suspended in a resin carrier.
When applied to your vehicle surfaces, the Ceramic particles bond with the surface to create a semi-permanent crystal clear protective layer, which is chemically resistant, scratch resistant and protects against environment contamination and UV rays.
In 2023 Ceramic Coating over took Car Wax as the most popular form of paint protection for cars in the UK, according to data from Google Trends.
What are the benefits of Ceramic Coating?
Ceramic Coating is a long lasting form of protecting your car’s paintwork but that’s not all.
- Ceramic coating lasts up to 7 years
- It enhances gloss and depth, improving your vehicle’s aesthetics
- Creates a hydrophobic finish that repels water, road traffic film, dirt and grime
- 9-10h hardness rating – providing scratch resistance
- Widely available to Do-It-Yourself or have it done for you with a professional
- Makes your car easier to clean and maintain
- Reduces the need to clean weekly since it stays cleaner for longer
How long does Ceramic Coating last?
There are 100s of different ceramic coating products available today, lasting anywhere from 6 months to crazy lifetime guarantees.
At Machine Polishing Central Scotland we have chosen a range of products through testing and research, to ensure sensible promises are made to the life expectancy of protection products. We use 18 month ceramic coating by Angelwax and 7 year ceramic coating by Performance PPL.
How much does Ceramic Coating cost?
Our ceramic coating packages range from £300 to £900 depending on the volume,
Ceramic Coating can be a significant investment, but it can provide long-lasting protection for the car’s paintwork, enhancing its appearance and resale value.
It can also save money in the long run by reducing the frequency of maintenance required and preventing the need for costly repairs due to damage caused by environmental contaminants or scratches.
Our packages include an 18 month ceramic coating, to ensure transparent pricing with no hidden extras.
Customers can choose to upgrade to longer lasting ceramic coatings but these are optional, and we simply charge cost of product plus labour to apply the product rather than trying to make money on products.
The main factor that influences the pricing of our packages is labor time – for instance the difference between a single stage and two stage polish package is £140 this is simply to cover the cost of the extra time spent on the vehicle.
How long does it take to get my car Ceramic Coated?
Our Ceramic Coating Treatments are often SAME DAY. Many competitors say they need customers’ vehicle for 2-3 days, sometimes up to 5 days (most of this time is for storage- so that their products can properly dry and cure).
The advanced coatings we use cure enough to face the Scottish weather in just a matter of hours, not days.
With most of our packages, if your car is dropped off in the morning, we can return your car the same day.
Can Ceramic Coating be applied to any type of vehicle?
Ceramic Coating can be applied to most types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, mobile homes and more.
However, it is important to note that the condition of the vehicle’s paintwork and the quality of the product used can affect the results.
A professional detailer can help determine if Ceramic Coating is suitable for your vehicle, and what work is needed to prepare the vehicle for Ceramic Coating application.
Is Ceramic Coating safe to be applied to matte or vinyl wraps?
Ceramic Coating can be applied to matte and vinyl wraps, but it may affect the appearance of the wrap.
It is important to consult with a professional detailer to determine whether Ceramic Coating is suitable for your specific wrap.
Also ensure that the vinyl wrap is clean and free of any contaminants before applying Ceramic Coating. Additionally, a professional detailer can assess the condition of the vinyl wrap and determine whether it is suitable for Ceramic Coating. If the vinyl wrap is already damaged, cracked or peeling, applying Ceramic Coating can potentially worsen the damage and cause further issues.
How is Ceramic Coating applied?
Ceramic Coating is typically applied in a multi-step process to ensure optimal results. Here’s a general overview of how the application process typically works:
Surface preparation: Before applying Ceramic Coating, the vehicle’s paint must be thoroughly washed and decontaminated to remove any dirt, grime, or contaminants that could affect the bonding of the coating to the surface.
Paint correction: If the paint has any scratches, swirl marks, or other imperfections, it may need to be polished to correct these issues before applying the Ceramic Coating. This step ensures that the surface is as smooth and defect-free as possible.
Coating application: Once the surface is properly prepared, the Ceramic Coating is applied using an applicator pad or microfiber cloth. The coating should be applied in thin, even layers, working one panel at a time. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application and curing times.
Curing: After the Ceramic Coating has been applied, it needs to cure for a specified period of time to fully bond with the surface. This typically involves leaving the vehicle in a dry, dust-free environment for a set period of time. Curing times vary by product and manufacturer.
Final inspection: Once the coating has cured, the vehicle is inspected to ensure that the coating has been applied evenly and there are no high spots or areas where the coating has been missed.
Overall, the application process for Ceramic Coating is straightforward but requires attention to detail and a commitment to following the manufacturer’s instructions for optimal results. If you’re not comfortable applying the coating yourself, it’s best to seek out a professional detailer who has experience with Ceramic Coating applications.
Is Ceramic Coating easy to maintain?
Compared to traditional wax or sealant applications, Ceramic Coating is generally considered easier to maintain in the long run. However, it does require proper care and maintenance to ensure its longevity and effectiveness.
One of the main benefits of Ceramic Coating is that it creates a hydrophobic layer on the surface of your vehicle, which helps repel water and other contaminants. This means that dirt, dust, and grime are less likely to stick to the surface, making it easier to wash and maintain. In some cases, a simple rinse with water may be enough to remove surface contaminants.
To maintain the benefits of Ceramic Coating, it is recommended to perform regular washing and detailing on your vehicle. This includes washing your car every few weeks using a high-quality ph neutral snow foam and car shampoo as well as a gentle washing mitt. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
It is also important to dry your vehicle thoroughly after washing to prevent water spots from forming. A high-quality microfiber towel or air blower can be used for this purpose. In addition, it is recommended to perform periodic inspections of your Ceramic Coating to ensure that it is still performing as expected.
Overall, while Ceramic Coating is easier to maintain than traditional wax or sealant applications, it still requires proper care and attention to ensure its longevity and effectiveness. With the proper maintenance and care, your Ceramic Coating can last for several years and provide long-lasting protection for your vehicle.
