What is PPF?
You may have heard of the term PPF before, and how it is advertised particularly for new car owners, but what exactly is it and why is it useful to every car owner?
What is Paint Protection Film and what is it made of?
Paint protection film, commonly known as PPF is a clear vinyl film that is applied to the exterior surface of a vehicle. It’s primarily made of thermoplastic urethane or polyurethane material, which is durable, flexible and clear in colour. The main reason it is so useful to car owners is that it is resistant to damage from chips, scratches and chemicals.
The history of Paint Protection Film:
Paint protection film has come a long way since its military origins, becoming a key component in modern automotive care. It was first developed and used during the Vietnam war in the 1960s to protect helicopter blades against damage from debris. 20 years later, it was then commercialised to be used within the automotive industry after its properties were recognised to be useful at protecting vehicle paint.
Then, in the 1990s technology became much more advanced which helped PPF become much more durable and it was also discovered to be self healing with the use of heat. By 2000, PPF became very popular with car enthusiasts, however they weren’t the only ones who wanted to get hold of it. By 2010 the versatility of the film was recognised to prove useful with enhancing both electronics and furniture as well.
how does ppf work?
It acts as a barrier to protect the car’s paint from hazards such as road debris, UV rays and bird droppings. With PPF, the car is also protected from manmade harm such as key marks and swirls. This is due to its self-healing property where any scratches that are made, will disappear over time when heat is activated.
PPF can be applied to the full vehicle, but the most affected areas will generally be the front bumper and the quarter panels.
Why should you get PPF applied to your vehicle?
Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause the paint to fade and appear washed out. This will affect the clear coat of the paint which can cause it to start cracking and peeling. Radiation can also break down the chemical bonds inside the paint leading to oxidation which causes the paint to have a rough texture instead of a nice smooth glossy finish.
All this means there will be an increased need to maintain and detail the car which in turn will soon add up in cost. Paint protection film will not only lengthen the life of your paint but will keep your vehicle protected for up to 10 years.
Due to decreased dirt and grime build up, cleaning your vehicle will also be quick and simple. Another positive is that by preserving the paint and preventing damage, PPF can help maintain the car’s resale value over a longer period. Like anything, PPF has developed over time, and you can now experience different kinds of PPF to suit your taste. The different “fashion films” that we have available are as follows:
- Matte PPF
- Metallic PPF
- Chrome PPF
- Colour changing PPF
So, if you’re looking for a bit of a colour change but you don’t want to wrap your car or have it repainted, PPF may serve as a multipurpose for you. Whilst protecting your vehicle you are also able to customise the exterior.
Our application process:
- We will wash and decontaminate your vehicle to ensure that the surface is clear of any debris
- We will then give your car clay bar treatment which is used to remove any microscopic contaminants that the full wash couldn’t remove
- We will machine polish the vehicle to correct any imperfections such as swirl marks or scratches in order to make the paint surface smooth ready to apply the paint protection film
- We will then begin to install the PPF which can vary on time (2-5 days) depending on the package you choose
